Engineering history

The engineers behind the parts

Every part in a car was somebody’s problem first. Here are 26 of the people who solved them, from 1782–1959, each linked to the lessons and parts they shaped.

Each story is retold in our own words from the source it cites. Where historians disagree, or a popular tale is doubtful, the card says so.

26 engineers shown

Before the car

to 1889
  1. 1782–1783 · Basics & Fundamentals

    James Watt

    Scottish engineer

Gave engines a unit of power by measuring them against horses.

  2. 1816 · Suspension & Steering

    Georg Lankensperger

    Carriage builder, Munich

Worked out how the front wheels should turn, and lost the naming rights.

  3. 1827 · Drivetrain & Differentials

    Onésiphore Pecqueur

    Steam-wagon patentee

Put a differential on a steam wagon's driven axle, one of many inventors of the idea.

  4. 1860 · Engine

    Étienne Lenoir

Inventor of an early commercial gas engine

Sold the first widely used gas engine, without compressing the charge.

  5. 1876 · Engine

    Nikolaus Otto and Eugen Langen

    Cologne engine makers

Turned the four-stroke cycle into a working engine.

  6. 1885–1893 · Fuel & Ignition

    Wilhelm Maybach

Engine designer, partner of Gottlieb Daimler

Taught the petrol engine to mix its own fuel and air.

  7. 1887–1889 · Wheels & Tyres

    John Boyd Dunlop

    Scottish veterinary surgeon in Belfast

Gave the bicycle an air-filled tyre.

  8. 1888 · Basics & Fundamentals

    Bertha Benz

Wife of Carl Benz; driver of the 1888 trip

Proved a motor car could make a long trip, and told its maker what to fix.

The automobile arrives

1890–1919
  1. 1891 · Drivetrain & Differentials

    Émile Levassor

    Car builder, Panhard et Levassor

Moved the engine to the front and put a clutch pedal and gear stick in the driver's reach.

  2. 1892–1897 · Fuel & Ignition

    Rudolf Diesel

    Engineer and inventor

Chased the theoretical efficiency limit and built the compression-ignition engine.

  3. 1900 · Aerodynamics & Technology

    Ferdinand Porsche

Young engineer at the Lohner works, Vienna

Put electric motors in the wheel hubs, then added a petrol engine.

  4. 1901 · Fuel & Ignition

    Gottlob Honold

    Engineer in Robert Bosch's workshop

Worked out Bosch's brief for a hot, long-lasting spark from fixed electrodes.

  5. 1902 · Brakes

    Frederick W. Lanchester

    Engineer and car maker, Birmingham

Patented the disc brake half a century before it caught on.

  6. 1902 · Heating & Air Conditioning

    Willis Carrier

    Research engineer, Buffalo Forge Company

Controlled humidity for a printing plant and invented modern air conditioning.

  7. 1905 · Transmission & Clutch

    Hermann Föttinger

    German engineer and inventor (1877–1945)

Combined a pump and a turbine in one housing, the ancestor of the torque converter.

    Ernest Henry

    Swiss mechanical engineer (1885–1950)

Designed the racing engine whose valve gear still dominates.

Motoring for everyone

1920–1949
  1. 1920 · Brakes

    Car maker behind the Lambda

Built a car whose body was its own structure.

  4. 1926 · Suspension & Steering

    Francis W. Davis

    Engineer at Pierce-Arrow
